Rivalry football game unites community
For the first time since 1995, the Royal vs. Simi Valley football matchup was played at Simi High. Acorn photographer Iris Smoot was on hand to capture all the big moments from the hard-fought contest, won by Royal, 28-7. It was the Highlanders’ 10th victory in their last 11 games against the Pioneers.

Pioneers make school history
Marmonte League title is the first for girls’ cross country program
      Alexis Miller and her fellow Pioneers couldn’t wait to update the school’s cross country banner. Who could blame them? On the same day the Simi Valley High girls’ cross country team won its first Marmonte League championship, the Pioneers taped a handmade “2009” on the banner in the school gym.

      Simi Valley High’s boys’ basketball team will host its eighth annual alumni basketball game Wednesday at the school gym. Former Pioneers will play against the current crop of varsity and junior varsity players.

Water polo coach finds silver lining in semifinal loss
      The Highlanders lost and won at the same time. Royal High’s boys’ water polo team fell to Palos Verdes 10-9 in the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 semifinals at Irvine on Wednesday. Despite the loss, head coach Steve Snyder couldn’t have been more pleased with the effort and determination the Highlanders exhibited in the pool.
