Cal Lutheran adds junior varsity programs
At a time when many college athletic departments are making cuts due to the economy, California Lutheran University has added junior varsity teams to its 19 NCAA Division III sanctioned sports.
Beginning this fall, CLU carried junior varsity volleyball and women’s soccer teams. The winter will feature both women’s and men’s basketball teams, and junior varsity baseball will debut in spring.
The CLU junior varsity teams have slightly shorter seasons and fewer practice sessions, helping students transition into college life while building relationships through sports participation.
“The addition of JV programs gives students the chance to participate in intercollegiate athletics while also enjoying many other opportunities at CLU,” athletic director Dan Kuntz said. “It is interesting to note that more students are now considering participation in multiple sports.
“These programs foster participation and inclusion, which is very much part of the NCAA Division III athletic philosophy.”
