Stan Mantooth announced his candidacy for Ventura County Superintendent of Schools during a Nov. 2 press conference in Ventura.

Mantooth, a Camarillo resident, was appointed county superintendent in September 2008. He replaced Charles Weis, who took a similar position in Northern California.

The county superintendent oversees the Ventura County Office of Education, which provides support and mandatory oversight services to local school districts.

The 58-year-old Mantooth has worked in education for more than 34 years. From 1996 until his appointment as county superintendent, he served as associate superintendent for administrative services with the Ventura County Office of Education. He helped oversee the expansion of Internet and wireless microwave services to all county school districts and the funding and construction of the new 65,000-squarefoot Conference and Educational Services Center in Camarillo.

Mantooth has a bachelor’s degree from Cal State Northridge and a master’s degree in school business administration from Pepperdine University, where he was formerly a professor. He teaches part-time at the California State University Channel Islands and Northridge campuses.
