City issues reminder to be water wise

2009-11-13 / Community

Water use should drop with temps

The city reminds residents that lawns need less water as the days get shorter and cooler.

Homeowners can reduce landscape watering by shutting off automatic sprinkler systems during rain and when rain is forecast.

City/Waterworks District No. 8 customers must reduce all landscape irrigation to 30 minutes per station per week before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m.

Landscape irrigation accounts for 66 percent of the city’s water use. Reducing irrigation is an essential part of the Water Conservation Program.

The district remains under a Level 1 water supply shortage. Metropolitan Water District and the Calleguas Municipal Water District have declared a water allocation, mandating a 15 percent water-use reduction, with fines if the reduction isn’t achieved.

A new interactive gardening website is available at www.ventura .watersavingplants.com.

The site is a guide for developing California-friendly landscapes and features a searchable waterwise plant database with photos.
