The Simi Valley Police Department offers the following tips for safe Halloween fun:

•Use caution when driving on Halloween night. Children may not use good judgment when crossing streets.

•Trim costumes with reflective tape for better visibility to cars. Costumes should be brightly colored and flame-resistant.

•Good lighting outside the house is a must to help children navigate hazards.

•Provide only store-bought, individually packaged treats.

•Send a responsible adult or older teen to walk with children who are trick-or-treating. Know the route they will be taking. Have children carry a cellphone and a flashlight.

•Keep candlelit jack-o-lanterns away from landings and doorsteps where costumes could brush against the flame.

•For children carrying a prop such as a scythe, butcher’s knife or pitchfork, make sure the tips are smooth and flexible.

•Children should eat a meal before going trick-or-treating so they won’t be tempted to eat their candy before parents can check it.

•Teach children everyday safety such as not getting into strange cars or talking to strangers, looking both ways before crossing streets and crossing when the pedestrian light allows.
