County grand jury brings charges against dental office shooter

A Ventura County grand jury has indicted Jaime Paredes, 30, for the July 1 mass shooting at Family Dental Care in Simi Valley.

Paredes’ wife, Mariela Paredes, was killed and three additional employees were seriously wounded when Paredes came into the dental office with an assault rifle and started shooting.

According to the district attorney’s office, Paredes was indicted for one count of murder by means of lying in wait, three counts of premeditated attempted murder, assault with a firearm, false imprisonment, burglary and weapons enhancements for the unlawful use of a firearm. Paredes is scheduled for arraignment on Jan. 19, 2010, in Ventura County Superior Court. He is being held without bail.

The D.A. has not announced if he will seek the death penalty.
