Max Leffler is putting up video-game numbers.

The junior quarterback for Grace Brethren’s football team set a school record for passing yards in a single game in only his third career start at the position.

Leffler completed 17-of-45 passes for 510 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions during the Lancers’ 41-32 loss to Frazier Mountain last weekend.

“When he’s in the lineup, we have a chance to win every game,” said Grace Brethren head coach Terry Gourley.

Sophomore wide receiver Jack Gilliland caught eight passes for a school-record 260 yards and three scores.

Junior Patrick Schafer added five receptions for 146 yards.

Leffler twisted his ankle early in the first quarter of a loss to Oak Park then missed playing in the Sept. 18 loss against Franklin.

His return on Sept. 25 sparked the Lancers’ to a 22-9 victory against Carpinteria at Moorpark College.

Grace Brethren (2-3) will try to get to .500 tonight at 7:30 against Bishop Diego at Santa Barbara City College.

Leffler, who led the team with 29 rushing yards against Frazier Mountain, added a touchdown on the ground.

“He’s still learning, and we’re working on what the defense gives him instead of trying to score a touchdown on every play,” Gourley said of Leffler.

“He’s a tremendous athlete. He has the ability to run around for 20 seconds and find the open receiver. But we’re actually trying to stop that.”

The Lancers, who led 32-14 at halftime at Frazier Mountain, struggled in the second half.

Leffler was sacked nine times overall—seven in the final two quarters—and threw all three of his picks in the final 24 minutes.

“The second half was as ugly as the first half was beautiful,” the coach said.

Leffler will only play quarterback the rest of the season to conserve his energy, Gourley said.

Leffler is a standout defender at safety. This season, he has 1,110 passing yards and 12 total touchdowns.

The coach is also pleased with his tough-as-nails defense, especially senior outside linebacker Mack Miller.

Gourley said the Lancers have a shot to make the playoffs and win a Frontier League title this season.

“We think our defense is better this year,” he said. “We’re really excited.” — Eliav Appelbaum
