Local sports briefs: Area athletes continue to excel
Simi Valley has always been home to some top-notch ath
etes, be it at the high school, college or professional level.
Here’s a quick update on a few locals who continue to shine
n their respective sports:
Grace Brethren grad sets
new volleyball digs record
A former Grace Brethren student broke a record for career digs at The Master’s College at Santa Clarita.
Leslie Windham recorded her 1,466th career dig on Sept. 9 against Cal Lutheran, earn
ng a school record in the process. This season, she is averaging close to seven digs per game.
The junior libero leads the Golden State Athletic Conference in digs, and is third in the category among all NAIA players.
RHS pitcher looking to earn
a spot on USA roster
Royal High senior pitcher Cody Buckel has been invited
o try out for the U-18 USA Na
ional baseball team in North Carolina.
Buckel, who went 7-2 with 84 strikeouts and a 1.92 earnedrun average last season with the Highlanders, qualified for the U-16 national squad last year.
Buckel also had a strong season at the plate for Royal, batting .391 with 16 RBI and 26 runs scored.
Magill honored for his
efforts on the mound
Matt Magill, a 2008 Royal High graduate, was named Pitcher of the Year with the Ogden (Utah) Raptors, a Rookie League team affiliated with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Magill, who was drafted by the Dodgers in 2008, led the Raptors with six wins and 55 strikeouts and started all 15 games he pitched. His win total was second in the Pioneer League.
The Raptors are managed by former Major League catcher Damon Berryhill.
According to Magill’s mother, Valarie, the pitcher will be invited with 10 teammates for a two-week instructional camp in Arizona.
Magill started his professional career with the Gulf Coast League Dodgers last season. The former Highlander didn’t allow a run in his first four appearances.
