Nearly five months after a brutal stabbing, two Simi Valley gang members have been arrested and held for the attempted murder of a rival gang member in Moorpark.

Turk Rangel, 18, and James Hodgkins, 19, were arrested Sept. 24 and Sept. 25, respectively. The pair was arrested for street terrorism and attempted murder.

Moorpark resident and rival gang member Reynaldo Munoz, 26, was stabbed 14 times in the 100 block of W. Los Angeles Avenue in Moorpark at around 9:40 p.m. May 10, according to police reports.

Munoz argued with seven men and a fight ensued, said Detective Allen Devers of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department.

“They came in contact with each other, and they obviously don’t get along because they’re rival gang members,” Devers said. “The situation just escalated into a stabbing.”

The group fled after stabbing Munoz in the head, face and torso. He also had a fractured right forearm and other injuries.

Munoz was treated at Los Robles Hospital; his injuries were not life-threatening.

Devers said investigators have confirmed seven men were involved in the attack on Munoz.

“There were other people involved,” Devers said. “There were seven guys that jumped him. . . . There’ve been others identified that we are in the process of connecting and subsequently arresting.”

Also arrested in connection with the stabbing was Victor Loza, 19, of Canoga Park, but the Ventura County district attorney’s office decided not to charge him with a crime and released him.

Hodgkins and Rangel remain in custody at $1.15-million bail and $645,000 bail, respectively.

The three men were taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies from the Moorpark Special Enforcement Unit, members of the East County Major Crimes Unit and officers from the Simi Valley Police Department.

The investigation is ongoing. Contact Devers at (805) 494-8201/8222 with information about the crime or additional suspects.
