Weighing in on the irrigation debate
I found Mr. Lukunich’s rationale less than convincing (letters, Simi Valley Acorn , Sept. 4). While his math is correct, his watering practices are both flawed and a continuing impediment to solving the water crisis.
First, nowhere do the new watering guidelines mandate a full 15 minutes per station. The 15 minute value is given as a maximum. Recalculating the comparison by using 10 minutes per station would yield a total of 360 total minutes (the same as currently used over six days of watering); however, by using five minutes per station he would effectively reduce his consumption by 50 percent.
Finally, he should consult lawn and gardening experts who will confirm that his daily shallow watering is both wasteful and harmful to healthy plants. He is effectively training his lawn to have shallow roots.
He will find that increasing the time while decreasing the frequency of watering will maintain his yard while producing one which is more tolerant.
