Grace Brethren going for second win of season

Simi, Royal football teams also in action

The Lancers hope to keep the ball rolling against a former league rival.

Grace Brethren’s football team, coming off a 32-30 victory against Big Bear during last week’s season opener, battles Oak Park tonight at 7:30 at Moorpark College.

In his first varsity start at quarterback, Max Leffler did a little bit of everything for the Lancers, accounting for all his team’s points.

Leffler completed 26-of-54 passes for 259 yards and three touchdowns. Furthermore, he returned an interception 77 yards for a touchdown, added a 2-yard touchdown run and ran the ball in for a two-point conversion.

The junior also led Grace Brethren with 77 rushing yards.

In other area action tonight, Simi Valley will try to get in the win column. SVHS plays Buena at home at 7.

The Pioneers lost their opener 32-6 to Burbank last week. Simi Valley’s Jake Maranto threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Michael Acuna to tie the game in the first quarter.

Senior wide receiver Adam Schechter showed why he can stretch a field with two catches for 76 yards. Senior lineman Tyler McAnny spearheaded the defense with 11 tackles and one sack. Matthew Baynard, a sophomore, paced Simi’s ground game with nine rushes for 75 yards.

Under the guidance of firstyear coach Kevin Flye, Royal opens its season tonight against Golden Valley at home at 7.

The Highlanders finished with a 4-6 record last year.
