Advice for parents who drop their kids off at school
Thank you for the article reminding drivers of what should be common-sense driving habits but which are often forgotten in the hurry to drop off a child and race to work (Acorn Aug. 21).
You did leave one off the list, however: Don’t stop in the middle of the road and let your child out.
Yes, this should be beyond common sense. But I see it happen countless times every day at the grade school by my home.
Parents who are too lazy or too rushed to find a parking space along the street simply stop in the middle of the road and let their child out.
Depending on the age of the child, the number of children and any last-minute talks that need to happen, this can take moments or minutes.
Meantime, the drivers stuck behind these careless, thoughtless parents are also late for work and want to drop their kids off.
So they frequently move to the other side of the road—yes, into oncoming traffic—as they try to get around the idiot stopped in the street.
The kids of these same lawbreaking parents also often race around the front of the car to give mom (or dad) a lastminute message or get a last-minute kiss. Yep, you guessed it, right into the path of the cars trying to squeeze around the lazy parent.
Please remind parents that their kids are watching.
Breaking the law because you are too rushed or too lazy to obey it sends the kids the clear message that rules don’t apply if you don’t want them to.
It also endangers the lives of those same children. I know most parents who do this think “Yeah, but when I do it, I’m safe about it.” Bull.
Every parent who does this should get an enormous fine and have to attend parenting classes. Kathy Carrington Simi Valley
