Yankee Doodles’ wish granted: Sports bar to stay open until 2 a.m.

Good behavior causes city to lift two-year curfew

The city this week lifted the curfew it imposed on Yankee Doodles two years ago, allowing the Tapo Street sports bar to stay open until 2 a.m. each night.

According to city staff, the Simi Valley Police Department has received no complaints from nearby residents regarding the business in the past year.

On Monday, the City Council approved an amendment expanding the restaurant’s hours of operation. Located at 2830 Tapo St., the local hangout has been closing at midnight Sunday through Thursday and at 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Because of the sports bar’s efforts to be a good neighbor, Police Chief Mike Lewis requested that the council increase the hours of operation up to the maximum allowed under the business’ Alcoholic Beverage Control license.

The new hours will go into effect immediately.

The police department initially had concerns about the late-night venue adversely impacting the surrounding residents when it opened in 2007, concerns that stemmed from a troublesome history with the sports bar that previously occupied the site.

For those reasons, the department petitioned the county Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control to not allow Yankee Doodles to serve alcohol later than 11 p.m.

But after running smoothly during its first year of operation, Yankee Doodles drew up a new contract with the city in August 2008 that relaxed the conditions placed on the restaurant. That contract extended the hours of operation to the most recent ones and provided for a one-year trial period to evaluate the level of complaints and police responses.

It also gave the chief of police the discretion to reduce or increase hours at a later date if circumstances changed.
