Retreat at Orthodox church begins tonight
St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Camarillo will host a spiritual renewal retreat for adults today and tomorrow, Aug. 28 to 29, at the church, 400 Skyway Drive, Camarillo, near the airportThe event runs from 6:30 to about 10 p.m. Friday and continues Saturday after Divine Liturgywhich begins at 9:30 a.m. A continental breakfast will be served at 10:30 a.m., followed by a screening of “The Truman Show,” with discussion afterwards.
The annual retreat, sponsored by the Greek Orthodox Christian Metropolis of San Francisco, is open to the public.
This year’s topic is “Christian Themes in Popular Media.” An exploration of music and movies will invite participants to consider a broader view of spirituality in American culture.
The Rev. Gary Kyriacou, presiding priest at St. Demetrioswill lead the retreat along with the Rev. Luke Palumbis from StBasil’s Greek Orthodox Church in Stockton, Calif.
The Friday night feature presenter will be Rock and Roll Halof Fame artist Chris Hillman, an original member of The Byrds.
Hillman, an Orthodox Christian and member of St. Barbara’s Greek Orthodox Church in Santa Barbara, will discuss the relevance of scripture in popular culture and scripture’s influence in his personal life and professional career.
Kyriacou will highlight Christian themes in the 1998 movie “The Truman Show.” Palumbis will address Christian motifs in the music of The Beatles.
The cost is $10 at the door and includes refreshments and a Saturday continental breakfast hosted by the women of the St. Demetrios Philoptochos Chapter.
