Police make arrest in stolen guns case

Two Simi Valley men, both 20, have been arrested on charges of possession of stolen guns.

Detectives in the Simi Police Department were investigating a residential burglary that occurred Aug. 13 on Collier Court in which several firearms were stolen.

On Aug. 15, the Los Angeles Police Department recovered a firearm that was taken during the burglary during the arrest of a known gang member in the San Fernando Valley.

At about 5:30 p.m. Aug 19, officers on routine patrol say they observed two suspicious people in the area of Madera Road and Royal Avenue. When the officers tried to make contact, the subjects ran. One of the people, Roberto Alexander Hidalgo, was captured shortly after his attempt to flee. The second subject was able to escape.

According to a police report, Hidalgo was found in possession of a loaded, stolen .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol that had been taken during the Collier Court burglary.

Based on information gathered during Hidalgo’s arrest, a search warrant was obtained for a residence in the 1600 block of Ballard Street. At about 5 a.m. Aug. 20, the SWAT team and detectives searched the residence. Armando Lomeli Jr. was reportedly found in possession of another firearm stolen during the burglary.

Both men were booked at the Ventura County Jail. Hidalgo has strong ties to a local illegal street gang, police said.

The investigation into the location of the remaining stolen firearms is ongoing. Anyone with information concerning this case is encouraged to call the Simi Valley Police Detective Unit at (805) 583-6955.
