Palin cancellation forces group to grant refunds at last minute

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will not appear to speak at an event in Simi Valley that is scheduled for tomorrow night, Aug. 8.

Despite an announcement last month by the Simi Valley Republican Women Federated, Palin representatives said this week that the one-time vice presidential candidate will not appear at the group’s 50th anniversary gala at the Reagan Library. Palin was one of several speakers slated for the event.

In a statement released by SarahPAC, Palin’s political action committee, spokesperson Meghan Stapleton said that Palin never committed to the event in the first place.

“As repeatedly stated to several in the media over the last week, former Governor Sarah Palin is not committed to attend the Simi Valley Republican Women’s event at the Reagan Library and in fact is not attending the event,” Stapleton said. “Neither the governor’s state staff nor SarahPAC has ever committed to attending this event or speaking at this event and even requested that the governor’s name be removed from the invitation several weeks ago.

“The governor has other work and commitments to take care of at that time. She looks forward to visiting her friends in California soon,” the statement concluded.

Though the original invitation touting “An Evening with Sarah Palin” said the $100 tickets to the event were nonrefundable, the Republican Women Federated has decided to grant refunds, said group president, Peggy Sadler.

“Anyone who has asked for a refund through e-mail or phone has received confirmation that it will be received,” Sadler wrote in an e-mail. “You can imagine that this has been a major headache, and there are many stories going around that are not factual. Our invitation did read that no refunds would be made, but we decided not to stand by that statement. We are trying to do the right thing by our friends.”

Sadler would not comment on Stapleton’s statement that Palin had requested to have her name taken off invitations weeks ago.
