Summer is an open book When it comes to California's four indistinct seasons, a majority of residents might cite summer as their favorite time of year. But to others, summer isn't such a hot time. If you have children, July and August can be a 60-day marathon of "What are we going to do next?" Not to mention, a budget buster. Summer camps aren't free, and if kids aren't in camps, they're probably underfoot. Taking a family vacation isn't as easy as it used to be. Both parents' work schedules must be coordinated, and while today's travel prices might be cheaper, family budgets are down, too. Keeping your children occupied during the dog days of summer doesn't have to be a chore. Go to the library or bookstore. The Simi Valley and Ventura County libraries have excellent programs that encourage your child to read, making sure their brains are working while school's out. Make it a habit to go at least once a week and encourage them to read something fun. If your child chooses to binge on easy material, don't worry. Summer reading should be enjoyable. Local playgrounds and parks are free for the public. Almost any neighborhood park is a fun place to have a picnic or to take part in an evening barbecue. Plus, our local park district offers an endless string of family-friendly activities, so be sure to see what's on the schedule. Summer's a perfect time to introduce your children to the exciting world around them. Teach them how to grow a garden, tie a knot or work with wood. Go on a long bicycle ride or take a hike on one of the many local trails. Remind them they don't need a high-def TV to enjoy Mother Nature's beauty. You don't have to count the days until school is back in session. There's plenty to do for families of all incomes. And if the day comes when there's simply nothing to do, that's okay. A long lazy day is also part of a good summer. |
