Bring back the dance floor at Candlelight

2009-07-10 / Letters

I am a frequent Candlelight guest. Being in my 20s, this is probably the best place that Simi Valley has to offer for the 21-plus crowd. Like many of the residents, I often have to travel outside of our great city to find any form of night life.

For my friends and I, Candlelight has been a blessing, offering a great environment that is roughly five to 30 minutes from all our houses, even those living in the San Fernando and Conejo valleys and even Valencia. Candlelight has given people a reason to go to Simi Valley and has in some ways put this city on the map for those of us not of the Reagan era.

Simi is always striving to become a destination city akin to Woodland Hills and Thousand Oaks, but how do they expect this to happen without having worldclass venues? The city has already driven out several good restaurants and retail businesses because the residents thought they were too expensive or not good enough.

Well, congratulations, we now have more retail space open than the entire San Fernando Valley, and yet no one will be looking to open here if we do not embrace all businesses willing to open up.

Look at what the city has done to the new Target on Madera and Los Angeles; they drove them away because they were not willing to compromise. I understand the neighbors have their rights, and I would be upset, too, but why can't we come to an even agreement?

How about music only inside or noise-prevention windows, block off the streets to their houses to prevent parking or even ticket all cars parked there. There are numerous options that can be used to prevent all this.

My one wish is that Candlelight reopens their nightclub portion. We all need to dance sometime. Josef S. Laguilles Simi Valley
