School district closes offices on Fridays in July to cut costs
Move will save district about $5,500, official says
      In an effort to reduce utility expenses over the summer, Simi Valley Unified School District has shut down their offices on Fridays With the exception of Simi Valley Adult School and designated summer school sites and high school campuses, all offices will be closed on all Fridays in July.

      Zachary Kiefer will make the big leap from Moorpark College to UCLA in the fall. A high grade point average and strong extracurricular efforts have earned the 19yearold Simi Valley resident a full tuition scholarship from the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC).

      The Simi Valley Education Foundation awarded five, $1,000 scholarships to local students to attend college, technical or vocational schools.

      Horace Mann Insurance Company of Simi Valley presented David Alexander Foldvary with the Lincoln Fellowship Award. The fellowship provides for a fiveday summer institute at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield, Ill., including lodging, roundtrip transportation and most meals.

Junior kindergarten to begin at Berylwood
District has gained 10 new students for fall class
      A junior kindergarten program slated to begin in the fall has already brought 10 new students into Simi Valley Unified School District. The program is aimed at children who are eligible for kindergarten but are on the younger end of the spectrum, turning 5 between July 1 and Dec. 2.
