Former presidential hopeful critical of Obama's polices
      Former Arkansas governor and Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee spoke to a sold-out audience at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley on June 29. Former first lady Nancy Reagan was in attendance.

Annual Stand Down event gives homeless veterans a hand up
      The 17th annual Ventura County Stand Down, which assists veterans in breaking out of the cycle of homelessness, will take place Fri. to Sun., July 24 to 26 at the California Army National Guard Armory in Ventura. Veterans in Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Los Angeles counties will participate.

Miss Simi contestants to dazzle in pageant
      Eight young women will compete for the Miss Simi Valley 2009 and Miss Teen Simi Valley 2009 titles at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow, July 11 at the High Street Arts Center, 45 E. High St., Moorpark. The contestants will compete in the categories of interview, talent, on-stage question, evening wear, community service and teens in scholastic achievement.

Blue Thong to host meet-and-greet
      The Blue Thong Society will host a Ventura County regional event from 4 to 11 p.m. Sat., July 18 at Aloha Steak Camarillo, 5800 Santa Rosa Road, Camarillo. A meet-and-greet party will be from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Participants may meet the society's founders and hear the news from the national office.

Running for their fellow deputy
     ONE HEART, ONE MIND—The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Class 377 carry their flag from the Simi Valley Police Department to Simi Valley High School on July 6 in honor of Dep. James Tutino, a Simi Valley resident and assistant football coach at SVHS who died in the Glendale train crash in 2005.
