Touched by Ritchie's letter

2009-07-03 / Letters

I am a recovering addict and have been clean and sober for 23 years. My heart breaks for Tom Ritchie and his family over the overdose death of their 28-year-old nephew (letters, Acorn, June 26).

Tom makes two statements that I would like to address: 1. If you are a user, do whatever it takes to get help. 2. If you are a loved one of a user, do whatever it takes to allow themselves to be helped.

Addicts get well when they choose to get well. Loved ones of addicts who think they can alter another person's bad choices and behavior will be disappointed.

You can argue the reason why anyone would use drugs, but there is no arguing that until the addict has had enough, there will be no change. People become human roadblocks or enablers. Clear boundaries and a set of consequences that you can live with are a good first step.

Tom, I know that your heart is broken but there was nothing you could have done. Your letter might inspire another to get serious about their addiction or the role they play in another's life.

There are countless programs available to the addict and the loved one. I have been visiting those rooms for 23 years after nearly destroying my life and the lives of everyone who came in contact with me.

There is hope for the addict and the loved one. I pray for you and your family. Your letter touched me. Rick Farquar Simi Valley
