Game face says 'game on'
     DETERMINED—Meghan Taylor of Simi Valley Girls Softball's 8-and-under Gold All-Stars unloads during the sixth annual Amanda McPherson All-Star Tournament, played at four Simi Valley sports complexes June 19-21. In all, 68 teams from the Greater Los Angeles area competed in an event named to honor a "little girl who helps us remember what is important in life." Taylor's team, and Simi Valley's 12-and-under Gold squad, claimed titles. Amanda McPherson's father, Phil, told players and coaches immediately after the final game: "It's not about who won or who lost. It's about being out on the fields, to always try your best, to have fun and to keep smiling."

Local chess club 'rooking' for new players
      A chess club meets from 6 to 10 p.m. Mondays at the Simi Valley YMCA, 3200 Cochran St. Fifty new players are needed. Men, women and children are welcome. Players are encouraged to bring a chess board or chess clock.

Event at Janss Marketplace will accompany T.O. fireworks
      The annual July 4 Janss Marketplace Fireworks Spectacular will be from 4 to 10 p.m. this Saturday at the shopping center, off the 101 Freeway at Moorpark Road and Hillcrest Drive in Thousand Oaks. Admission is free.

Get out of the heat and in the swim at public pools
      When the going gets hot, the hot go to the pool. Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District has two pools in Simi Valley open for public swimming during the summer months. The cost for public open swim sessions is $3 per person. Summer swim passes for individuals and families may be purchased at the pool.
