Radio hams host public demo
The Ventura County Amateur Radio Society, Simi Settlers Amateur Radio Club and Ventura County Amateur Radio Club will demonstrate the emergency capabilities of amateur radio for 24 hours starting at 11 a.m. Sat., June 27 on the grounds of the Reagan Library, 40 Presidential Drive, Simi Valley.
During the event, the public may meet and talk with local ham radio operators and see what the Amateur Radio Service is about. The public may learn how to get an FCC radio license. In emergencies such as wildfires, winter storms and tornadoes, amateur radio, often called "ham radio," is often the only way people can communicate. Amateur radio operators are often the first to provide rescuers with information and communications.
On this weekend, hams across the country will host public demonstrations of emergency communications abilities, including the newest digital and satellite capabilities, voice communications and historical Morse code.
More than 30,000 amateur radio operators across the country participated in last year's event.
