Fireworks hotline is back
      With the Fourth of July a week away, Simi Valley Police Department officers are on the lookout for unlawful fireworks activity. Working in cooperation with the Ventura County Fire Department, officers are aggressively enforcing the laws prohibiting the possession and discharge of fireworks.

Simi fireworks show promises plenty of 'Siss! Boom! Bah!'
      The Rotary Club of Simi Valley noontime club will host the 39th annual Fourth of July Festival and Fireworks Extravaganza at Rancho Santa Susana Park, 5005 Los Angeles Ave, Simi Valley. The event is free to the public and is cosponsored by the city of Simi Valley and the Rancho Simi Recre ation and Park District.

Radio hams host public demo
      The Ventura County Amateur Radio Society, Simi Settlers Amateur Radio Club and Ventura County Amateur Radio Club will demonstrate the emergency capabilities of amateur radio for 24 hours starting at 11 a.m. Sat., June 27 on the grounds of the Reagan Library, 40 Presidential Drive, Simi Valley.

Group to hold July 4 Tea Party
      Simi Valley Tea Party and Independence Day Freedom Rally, "Re-declaring Our Freedom," will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sat., July 4 at Rancho Simi Park Amphitheater, 1765 Royal Ave., Simi Valley.

Public still weighing in on Proposition 8
     IMPASSIONED DEBATE—Above, Republican Stephen Frank, political consultant and publisher of online newsletter "CA Political News & Views," speaks for Prop. 8 during a June 17 debate at the Simi Valley Library. More than 25 people showed up for "Prop. 8 Debate—Banning Gay Marriage," which was sponsored by the Simi Valley/Moorpark Democratic Club. Three panelists participated in the debate. Speaking against Prop. 8 were Andre Verdun, who holds a law degree and is a member of the Ventura County Stonewall Democrats and the Ventura County Democratic Central Committee, and Edie Brown, an activist in the LGBT & HIV/AIDS community since 1988. Below, Ventura County Firefighter Nathan Sweet shares his views on the proposition.
