Members of Outdoor Venture Crew 9642 will conduct an indoor/outdoor backpacking seminar from 1 to 4 p.m. Sun., June 28 at the Simi Valley Elks Lodge, 1561 Kuehner Drive, Simi Valley.

The seminar is targeted to youths ages 14 through 20. The twosession course includes indoor instruction and an outdoor experience where participants practice what they've learned.

The objective is for participants to become aware of the challenges experienced on a backpack outing and to feel comfortable in the wilderness. Included is information on appropriate gear, food preparation, outdoor first aid, maps, compass and wilderness safety.

The outdoor session, an easy trail in the Los Padres National Forest, is July 11 and 12.. Cost is $15 per person to cover meals.

Previous experience is not required. Experienced adults guide and provide safety. Members of Venture Crew 9642, chartered by Simi Valley Elks Lodge, live in Moorpark, Simi Valley and the Conejo Valley. Experienced teen backpackers are welcome.
