Assemblymember Cameron Smyth (R-Santa Clarita) has named Wayne Wright of Simi Valley as the 38th Assembly District's Veteran of the Year.

Wright has been a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for more than 16 years. He is the post commander of VFW Post 10049 in Simi Valley.

In 2008, Wright performed more than 600 hours of volunteer work with the VFW, administering aid to veterans in need and VFW-related community service.

Wright served in the U.S. Army and flew combat missions over Vietnam as a helicopter pilot.

He is also active with Boy Scouts of America and was honored as Chartered Organization Representative of the Year in 2007-08.

Wright will be honored at a luncheon with other veterans from across California in Sacramento on June 17.
