CHP officer discovers bomb during DUI arrest
The California Highway Patrol arrested a man on charges of driving under the influence and possession of an explosive device on a public highway at approximately 8:23 p.m. June 1 on Santa Clara Avenue at Ventura Boulevard in Camarillo.
At approximately 7:57 p.m., according to police reports, the Ventura CHP received calls of a possible DUI driver who was heading north on the 101 Freeway in the Camarillo area.
CHP Officer Robert Smith located the vehicle which, at the time, was traveling northbound on the freeway near Del Norte Boulevard. Smith stopped the vehicle off the freeway on Santa Clara Avenue.
The driver, later identified as James Thomas Jacquez, 41, was arrested, charged with driving under the influence and booked into the Ventura County Jail.
After the arrest, the vehicle was checked, and Smith found an object under the driver's seat which he believed was an explosive device.
The Ventura County Sheriff's Bomb and Arson unit was called to the scene to inspect the device.
The roadway was closed for more than an hour while the device was removed from the vehicle and disarmed. The device was a homemade explosive device and was taken for disposal.
