Cajun Fest gets cookin' tomorrow

Simi's biggest party helps raise money for 50 area charities

The Simi Sunrise Rotary Club's 20th annual Cajun Creole Music Festival will take place over Memorial Day weekend at Rancho Santa Susana Park, 5005 Los Angeles Ave., Simi Valley.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. tomorrow, May 23, and 11 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sun., May 24.

The festival is the second largest Cajun festival west of the Mississippi and draws people from across California and many other states.

Entertainers include Grammy-nominated and award-winning Cajun and zydeco bands Lisa Haley and the Zydecats, Feufollet, and Cedric Watson and Bayou Creole.

New this year are blues bands performing on a second stage.

The family oriented event will also feature the Cajun Kids' Area with bouncers, rock climbing walls, slides and gyroscopes. Children may create artwork in the Kids' Craft Area.

The second annual Kids' Talent Show for local children ages 17 and under will be presented on Saturday. Patrons will vote for their favorite act, and the top 10 acts will return Sunday to compete before a panel of judges, including Antonio Sabato Jr.

Food for sale will include authentic Cajun-Creole jambalaya and crawfish, barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs, funnel cake, fruit smoothies and kettle corn. Vendors will sell clothes, purses, crafts, pottery, jewelry, toys, posters, hats, homemade salsas and saltwater taffy .

Proceeds from the event go to more than 50 local charities and international Rotary projects.
