Car containing out-of-town gang members crashes into tree
Three Moorpark gang members were arrested in Simi Valley on Saturday night after one of the men crashed into a tree on Lemon Drive, police officials said.
The incident is at least the third gang-related incident that has been reported in Simi since February.
According to a police report, Simi Police Officer Dennis McCrillis was leaving the station May 16 at about 9:50 p.m. when he observed a vehicle with two occupants who resembled known gang members. The subjects, police said, immediately began acting suspiciously and attempted to evade the officer.
Traveling at a high rate of speed, the men drove northbound on Lemon Drive, ran a stop sign at Avenida Simi, then collided with a tree. The driver, Richard Corralejo, 18, sustained a serious head injury, and his 15-year-old passenger received minor facial cuts and an injured knee.
Both were taken to Simi Valley Hospital for treatment.
A loaded, double-barreled, sawed-off shotgun was found in the vehicle along with more than an ounce of marijuana, police reported.
Officers confirmed Corralejo to be a Moorpark gang member. When another gang member, 23-year-old Robert Camacho, arrived at the scene just minutes after the accident to check on his associates, he was arrested and charged with parole violation.
Corralejo was arrested on charges of unlawful possession of a weapon, carrying a concealed firearm and carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle. Both Corralejo and the juvenile male were charged with committing a crime for the benefit of a street gang.
Following their hospital visits Corralejo was booked and the 15yearold was taken to Juvenile Hall. Camacho was booked at the East Valley Sheriff's Station in Thousand Oaks.
Simi police are continuing to investigate the incident.
In February, a fight between rival Simi and Moorpark gang members broke out outside a residence on Arcane Street. All those involved in the fight are Simi residents. The incident resulted in the stabbing of two males.
In April, a Moorpark gang member was arrested after a fight among 10 suspected gang members at the Arena Sports Grill & Bar in Simi.
The man arrested was reportedly in possession of a loaded .380 semiautomatic.
Simi Valley has two gangs that have been recognized as official criminal organizations by California courts.
