Beware the power of a pack of galloping hounds
I would first like to express my approval for the Simi Dog Park. I was pleased when it opened and was impressed at the quick response of the park district in fixing the areas of concern reported by the community.
My dog and best friend, Vinny, a 62-pound English bulldog, and I have been constant users of the facility since the day it opened.
However, while the safety issues and errors of design have been fixed on the outside of the park, there lingers, within the park itself, a danger that I'm not sure is fixable.
Today marks almost two weeks since I am able to bring Vinny back to the park. On our last visit, he was violently trampled by a pack of four or five large dogs running full speed. Vinny walked away with a serious limp.
When it persisted and got worse, we took him to the vet. We were told when he got trampled, he suffered an injury they call medial luxating patella. The vet said his knee was popped out of the socket. Earlier the same day, I witnessed another dog, by coincidence a smaller English bulldog, get trampled by the same pack. That dog came up with a bloody nose.
Many times I have seen packs of larger dogs, American bulldogs, pit bulls, setters and Labs, run so fast and powerfully together that they have actually knocked people right off their feet.
At first I took Vinny to the small dog side, but, not knowing his own strength and having the mentality of a 2-year-old, when he wanted to play with the Chihuahuas, he proved to be too big and heavy for them, so we immediately ventured over to the big dog side.
Vinny was a very active and fun-loving dog, but now he lies on the couch, drugged to keep him off his feet, awaiting his fate.
I guess what I'm trying to do is alert the dog owners who go to the park to keep an eye out for the potential dangers of the power that runs through the park.
I know they are just being dogs and doing what dogs do, but somehow we need to control just how much damage their "fun" can actually cause. Peter Carrube Simi Valley
