Worried teacher layoffs could affect graduation

2009-04-17 / Letters

The article in the March 13 Acorn ("Future in question for more than 200 Simi Valley teachers") about how teachers are in the line of fire really concerns me.

Approximately 230 Simi Valley teachers may lose their jobs when the district makes its final decision in May. Depending on which teachers get laid off, students might be put in the position of not graduating on time.

For example, if the one and only health teacher at Santa Susana High School, Mr. Helmuth, gets a pink slip, the students who still need their five credits of health to graduate will lose their chance of getting them unless they are old enough to attend the Simi Valley Adult School.

Local teachers have been showing their support and feelings by handing out fliers and holding up signs at Simi Valley schools to raise awareness of the matter to parents of students who attend these schools.

I commend these teachers for standing up for themselves, and I wish them all the best of luck. Claire Talbot Simi Valley
