Town Center shortens hours
Some tenants at the Simi Valley Town Center have opted to reduce their hours.
At the Simi mall, a majority of retailers have chosen to open an hour later and close an hour earlier during the week, meaning that their Monday through Friday store hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Weekend hours have remained the same. On Saturdays, the mall is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
"We decided to shorten the shopping hours because it might save the tenants on some operating costs and overhead," General Manager Keith Geiger said.
The Town Center is not the only Forest City-owned mall to start opening later and closing earlier, Geiger said. Other mall retailers, including Westfield, have done the same.
Geiger—who called the change a "temporary break"— said the new weekday hours represent the minimum number required and tenants are allowed to stay open according to the original schedule if they have the demand for business.
Still, he said, about 75 percent of the stores have decided to follow the abbreviated hours.
The impetus behind the change is the fact the people are shopping less right now and sales are down, Geiger said.
"We've showed a decrease in sales since the economic (downturn). It mirrors the industry average of retail," he said. "Nothing exceptional."
Despite the recession, the mall has seen more openings than closings in recent months.
While Athena Jewelry Company closed in early March, Peachy Keen frozen yogurt opened in January, Haagen Dazs reopened in March and T-Mobile opened in March.
