Fire consumes Simi machine shop

A fire destroyed a Simi business in an industrial park early Monday morning, fire officials said.

The blaze was reported at 4:28 a.m. at H.G. Products, a machine shop at 2190 N. Shasta Way, just off Easy Street.

"There were several reports of it and they were all saying that they could see flames," said Capt. Ron Oatman, a spokesperson for the Ventura County Fire Department. "And then the companies that were in route could actually see smoke and flames as they approached, too."

When firefighters arrived on the scene, fire had already consumed the building. Flames went through the roof, Oatman said.

Explosions could also be heard coming from inside the machine shop.

Oatman guessed that pressure cylinders going off probably caused the sounds.

About 50 firefighters responded to the fire and, rather than taking hose lines inside the structure, they used three ladder trucks to spray water on the fire from above.

While the fire was knocked down in about 45 minutes, firefighters continued to put out hotspots for a couple of hours Monday morning.

"It was basically a total loss of the contents" inside the machine shop, Oatman said.

No one was injured in the fire, which has been determined to be accidental.

Oatman said Shasta Way was shut down for several hours but that it was reopened in time for business hours.
