The use of Title I money should be reevaluated

2009-03-20 / Letters

I have been a resident of the Simi Valley since 2004. I enjoy the area and the schools that all three of my children attend.

I have, for the most part, been very happy with all teaching staff my children have had in the past, and I look forward to the future.

I was temporarily an administrative temp in the Simi Valley school district in 2006 working at a Title I school. I worked in the Title I office doing clerical work. I mention this only because I had little or nothing to do while I was the temp in the department.

I believe out of the approximate time I was a temp I possibly had five full days of work. I'd offer assistance to the main office, but I believe I wasn't allowed to assist. If I remember correctly, I worked there for about two months.

My understanding is that all Title I money is separate from the general budgets for each school. If that is the case, the Title I budgets should be reevaluated, as paying me to sit for four to five hours a day, five days a week, was a waste of taxpayer money. I'm sure there is someone else sitting in that office looking for something to do.

Possibly, Title I funds can then be used by the larger population in the district. Title I classes should be held after school or in a different venue so as not to interrupt the daily curriculum.

The more funds we take from the larger population restricts all learning, inclusive of Title I.

Our teachers and administrators need our help. Our children are our future. Our future isn't receiving what they need to succeed. Patricia L. Park Simi Valley
