String of catalytic converter thefts reported in the region

2009-03-13 / Police

During the last two months, cities in Los Angeles and Ventura counties have experienced an increase in catalytic converter thefts from vehicles.

Simi Valley police reported 17 such thefts between Jan. 14 and March 1.The crimes have occurred throughout the city in residential neighborhoods and with no discernable pattern.

The thieves have been targeting Toyota and Nissan pickup trucks or SUVs because these vehicles have a higher ground clearance than a passenger car, which gives criminals easier access to the undercarriage. In many cases the thieves have quickly cut or unbolted the converters from the undercarriage.

Residents are encouraged to immediately notify the police department if they witness any suspicious activity and to park vehicles in a garage or a secure, welllit parking area.
