Now is a good time to check smoke alarms
      Daylight-saving time begins on Sun., March 8 this year, and changing clocks is a good reminder to change the batteries in smoke alarms, according to the Ventura County Fire Department. Smoke alarms save lives, but they must be properly installed and in working order to do that.

Plans for train crash memorial moving forward
City hosting third workshop
      The city of Simi Valley will conduct its third public workshop for input on designing a memorial in recognition of the victims of the Sept. 12, 2008 Metrolink collision. The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Tues, March 10 in room 106 of the Simi Valley Senior Center, 3900 Avenida Simi.

Job fair gives youth a chance to get a foot in the door
      The 23rd annual Youth Employment Service Job and Career Expo will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sat., March 28 at the Boys & Girls Club of Simi Valley, 2850 Lemon Drive. The event is free to job seekers and employers, and is presented as a community service by the city of Simi Valley and sponsored by the Boys & Girls Club.

Scouts load up on food for less fortunate
      BIG BOUNTY— Local Boy, Girl and Cub Scouts rendezvoused at the Simi train station last Saturday to total up the nonperishable food items they'd collected during a day-long food drive to benefit area food banks. The week prior, the Scouts hung fliers on doors around town asking residents for donations.

Park district's next drive-in movie event coming up
      Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District will be screening a drive-in movie on Fri., March 13 in the back parking lot at Rancho Santa Susana Community Center, 5005 Los Angeles Avenue, Simi Valley. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the movie will start at 7:30 pm.
