District sets dates, locations for summer school

Simi Valley Unified School District has announced dates and locations for its 2009 summer school program.

Elementary school students eligible for summer school may take courses at Berylwood Elementary School from June 22 to July 17. Summer school classes will also be held at Simi Valley High from June 22 to July 24 and at Apollo High from June 24 to July 21.

Summer school for middle school students, which was cut last year due to budget constraints, will not be available for a second straight year.

The district is required to provide supplemental instruction to retention students in second through ninth grades and for high school students who do not demonstrate enough progress toward passing the California High School Exit Exam.

Passing the CAHSEE is a requirement for graduation.

High school students will be eligible for summer school if they fail core academic classes such as English, math, science, history and foreign languages.

Details on summer school course offerings will not be decided until the state budget issue is resolved.
