Center for Spiritual Living hosting series dedicated to nonviolence
The Center for Spiritual Living in Simi Valley will host a series of events celebrating the Season of Nonviolence, a 64-day worldwide educational, media and grassroots campaign demonstrating that nonviolence is a way to solve conflicts and transform lives.
All events are free and open to the public. The Center for Spiritual Living is at 1756 Erringer Road.
"It covers everything from creating peace in the home to creating peace in the world at large," said Jim Lockard, spiritual leader of the center. "So at every level where there may be conflict, it's about trying to reduce that and heal those kinds of issues."
The Season of Nonviolence began Jan. 30 and runs through April 4. The dates mark the assassinations of resistance leaders Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., respectively, two men who preached ending injustice through nonviolent means. The 2009 series also recognizes the contributions of Cesar Chavez, a leader for the rights of farm workers.
The Association of Global New Thought, a Santa Barbara-based organization, started the campaign 11 years ago. Its members are New Thought spiritual leaders representing various churches throughout the country and the world.
As part of the campaign, the Center for Spiritual Living will sponsor peace mediations, workshops and lectures. The February schedule follows.
•7 p.m. Thurs., Feb. 12: Viewing of "Paper Clips," a documentary about a Tennessee elementary school class that embarks on a project collecting paper clips to comprehend the millions of lives lost during the Holocaust. Discussion will follow the movie.
