What's new on DVD for the month of July Film and television author Randy Williams reviews the latest movies, TV shows, documentaries and music programs available online and at retail stores. Jungle Book 2: Special Edition (Disney)- The sequel to one of Disney's most beloved pictures features Jungle boy Mowgli (Haley Joel Osment) deciding to forsake civilized village life for the "bare necessities" of the wild with his old friends. However, the evil tiger Shere Khan (Tony Jay) is looking for a little payback after Mowgli's last adventure. A hut full of extra materials includes an allnew adventure game, deleted scenes, music videos and a highlight recap of the original animated classic. High Noon: TwoDisc Ultimate Collector's Edition (Lionsgate)- The American cinema classic features Gary Cooper in an Academy Award-winning performance as Marshall Will Kane, personally compelled to face a revengeseeking deadly enemy (gunslinger Frank Miller played by Ian McDonald) only to find that his own town refuses to help him. Winner of four Oscars, it also marked the first starring role for Grace Kelly, who was spotted by producer Stanley Kramer in an off-Broadway play. The first-rate DVD gives this landmark film all the respect it deserves, beginning with a digitally remastered transfer from the original film negative. The Game Plan (Disney)- Joe Kingman (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson), a football great with an ego bigger than his bank account, is getting ready for a run at the big championship game when the 8year-old daughter (Madison Pettis) he never knew he had shows up at his not-so-family-friendly bachelor pad. As the big game gets closer he begins to realize the most meaningful win he can achieve is the heart of the one little fan who counts the most. Comes with a locker room full of extras. 1988 L.A. Dodgers World Series: Collector's Edition (A&E)- From Orel Hershiser's record-setting scoreless innings to the historic World Series home run by Kirk Gibson, here is the definitive record of one of the greatest seasons by one of baseball's most storied franchises. Spread out over seven discs are nearly 18 hours of material ranging from rare interviews and award ceremonies to all five World Series games. Intelligence: Season One (Acorn Media)- From north of the border comes this compelling 14episode, fourdisc crime/espionage drama with elements of "The Wire" and "The Sopranos." The ensemble cast features Ian Tracey as Jimmy Reardon, a dedicated father, respected businessman and big-time drug smuggler fighting for turf and Klea Scott as Mary Spalding, a ruthlessly ambitious head of Vancouver's organized crime unit who has her own battles for power within the intelligence community. New Zealand 2 (Globe Trekker)- Take a refreshing journey to this land of unspoiled landscapes and immense natural beauty. Spirited young guides Ian Wright and Zay Harding take us through some amazing sights on both the North and South Islands. From the picturesque cities of Wellington and Christchurch to a train trek through the diverse topography on both sides of the Southern Alps, New Zealand is a brilliant natural paradise. ER: The Complete Ninth Season (Warner Bros)- This multiEmmywinning drama created by best-selling author Michael Crichton explores the turmoil of Chicago's public hospital emergency room and the lives of those doctors, nurses and technicians behind the splitsecond decisions that often determine life or death. Season nine opens with staff members of County General Hospital confined to the ER and under lockdown for two weeks, and the drama builds from there. All 22 episodes come on six discs, including a gag reel and deleted scenes. Law & Order Special Victims Unit: Year Six (Universal)- All 23 episodes of the sixth season are included as members of the New York Special Victims Unit hunt down perpetrators and aid the emotionally scarred victims of sexually based crimes. Special guests include Angela Lansbury, Martin Short and Amanda Plummer. 24: Season One Special Edition (Fox)- The popular crime drama starring Kiefer Sutherland includes all 24 one-hour episodes from the inaugural season. Packaged in a tin box with a "ticking clock," it is filled with more than three hours of never-before-seen special features, including a season seven trailer, more than 25 deleted and extended scenes, alternate endings and two allnew behind-the-scenes segments. |
