School board filing period is open The filing period to run for one of three open positions on the Simi Valley school board in the Nov. 4 general election began Monday. As of Wednesday afternoon, only one person had picked up required application papers from the school district office at 875 Cochran Street. The filing period ends Friday, August 8 at 5 p.m. The terms of school board president Rob Collins, clerk of the board Debbie Sandland and board member Janice DiFatta expire this year. Collins was elected to the board in November 2004. Sandland has sat on the board since she was first elected in 1992. DiFatta has served on the school board since November 1996. Anyone interested in running for school board must pick up the proper paperwork at the district office and then return the proper forms to the Ventura County Elections Office in the Hall of Administration at 800 S. Victoria Avenue in Ventura. Although the school district office will be closed every Friday in July and August 1, it will stay open until 5 p.m. on Friday, August 8. Anyone can pick up a filing packet at the district office, Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The four-year term runs from Tuesday, December 16 through December 2012. To be qualified, a candidate must be at least 18 years old and a registered voter living within the district.
