Acorn graduation coverage should be fair and balanced What a sad day it is today opening up my weekly Simi Valley Acorn only to find graduation photos, in color no less, from the two largest high schools in Simi Valley. Isn't there another one named Santa Susana High School, a specialty magnet school located in Simi Valley? I believe it exists since I attended the graduation ceremony there last week. So what I want to know is what happened? Why the glorified photos on the front page without Santa Susana? Why is the school listed on page 19 and with a black-and-white photo? Why wasn't there a list of names of the graduates? Do Royal and Simi High donate more to your paper? Is it because the Acorn can cover major sporting events on its pages and Santa Susana cannot, since it doesn't have a sports department? Maybe your own kids or relatives attend. I am completely disappointed in the Acorn for not recognizing all three high schools on the front page and in color. My oldest was a graduate from Santa Susana High, Class of 2007. He came here after studying overseas most of his life. I chose Santa Susana High because it was a smaller school and I honestly felt it could better serve him than the larger populated ones. And once he graduated, again there was hardly any coverage given to his school. He was very disappointed. He wondered why the paper hardly supported his school when he graduated. Once again, history is repeated. My daughter is currently attending Santa Susana High. She is the Class of 2010. She is hoping by then the Simi Valley Acorn will recognize her high school and her hard work by receiving equal recognition just like the other two major high schools in Simi Valley. Sherry Haddad Simi Valley Editor's note: The Acorn published a list of 2008 Santa Susana High School graduates June 13. |
