Filing period to run for city office opens July 14 The nomination period for candidates for the city of Simi Valley's Nov. 4 general municipal election will open Monday, July 14. The period will continue until 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8. Three City Council seats are up for election this year. Voters will be choosing a mayor for a term of two years and two council members for four-year terms. Mayor Paul Miller's second two-year term is one of the three City Council positions set to expire this year. Miller, who has not had a challenger in the last two mayoral elections, has already announced that he will seek a third term as head of the council. The fouryear terms of council members Steve Sojka and Barbra Williamson are also expiring this year. Williamson, like Miller, has filed an intent to run form with the city clerk's office for her seat on the council, according to city clerk Anne Morrow. A person is eligible to run for the office of mayor or City Council member if they live within the boundaries of the city of Simi Valley and are a registered voter of the city at the time nomination papers are issued. Anyone interested in becoming a candidate for one of the three elected positions must obtain nomination papers from the city clerk's office at City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road, during the nomination period. The office is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. In order to be verified as an eligible candidate, a person must complete a series of forms and obtain at least 20 signatures supporting their nomination. If an eligible incumbent does not file nomination papers by the Aug. 8 deadline, the filing period will be extended until Wednesday, Aug. 13. Prospective candidates should make an appointment to obtain and file the required nomination papers with the city clerk's office by calling (805) 583-6720. |
