Time's up for gabby drivers
The countdown is on and wheels are in motion to eliminate "DUI-C," driving while under the influence of cellphones.

California's campaign against the use of the mobile devices in motor vehicles gets underway July 1- and be prepared, Simi Valley, because our officers are chomping at the bit to enforce it.

Whether or not one agrees with the need for the new law, the fact is it's drivers in communities like Simi who will have to be the most diligent about obeying it.

That's because we are lucky enough to live in a community with a low crime rate, meaning our officers are more likely to take the time to pull someone over for the offense than a cop patrolling the streets of the San Fernando Valley.

The fine for a first offense is $20, and $50 for every violation after that. Though breaking this law won't get you a point on your driving record, the DMV will be notified, which means it could have an effect on your insurance rates.

Law enforcement has pledged that there will be no grace period for enforcing the new law. Which means, like it or not, it's time to put down those phones and pick up a handsfree device.

Whether you are opposed to the law or for it, we can all agree to pledge to be more conscientious drivers.

Whether a newspaper, a microwave burrito or a cellphone is the culprit, we're all guilty of taking our minds off the road at one time or another.

So, people, please put down those cellphones or whatever else and get back to the business of driving.

Negotiating our crowded streets and highways is difficult enough. Cellphones only make it harder.

And if you see a driver holding a cellphone to their ear, don't be a vigilante and do something irrational. But at least give 'em the evil eye.
