Honor local history and contribute to the General Plan

During the recent National Volunteer Week, the media was filled with information about how we can all contribute to making our county and cities a better place to live. Slogans such as "Find your passion and help your community" kept reminding us that volunteers play a tremendous role in enriching the quality of life in our communities.

One article focused on what various volunteers reported as stimulating and fulfilling emotions that compensated them fully for their personal involvement.

Having lived in Simi Valley since 1968, I have learned a great deal about the city, and have been fortunate to form many lasting friendships through participation in proactive programs. So if you haven't decided how you might further enrich your life through volunteerism, I offer a couple of suggestions:

One of the most important things anyone can do is to pay attention to what is going on in your city. Read a little in the local paper, catch an occasional City Council meeting, join Neighborhood Council or a service organization, and check the city's website occasionally- it's full of information.

Being an informed citizen does not require you to join an organization or spend a specific amount of volunteer time. I encourage everyone to follow the process of developing a new General Plan for our future. This process started last year, and the next community workshop is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 22 at City Hall- details are available at www.simivalley.org.

Simi Valley is a work in progress so also learn about our past. Pride in our interesting history helps us to become more involved in shaping the future. The Simi Valley Historical Society offers you a tangible connection to our history through its volunteer programs at Strathearn Park and Museum.

Opportunities include children's educational programs, individual tours, special events and preservation activities of many types. The next training classes are May 20, 22, 27 and 29 - 7:30 p.m. at Strathearn Park.

This is a great time to learn a lot and give back a flexible amount of time. Call Karla Hubbell for information or scheduling at (818) 388-3301.
