Royal High student in running to win art scholarship

The Alliance for the Arts, the official fundraising arm of the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, has announced the nine student finalists who will perform at the second annual Richard Carpenter Scholarship competition on Saturday, May 10 at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza in Thousand Oaks.

The middle school finalists and their schools are David Fraley, instrumental, Monte Vista; Juliette Goglia, vocal, Lindero Canyon; and Lily Kobabe, dance, Medea Creek.

The high school finalists and their schools are Ricky Lucchese, instrumental, Royal; Mariah Murphy, dance, Thousand Oaks; and Katie Young, vocal, Newbury Park.

College finalists are Alyssa Belden, dance, Moorpark College; Emma Dunbar, vocal, Westminster Choir College; and Jamie Gruttemeyer, vocal, Cal State Long Beach.

The first-place winners in each category will be awarded $5,000 each.

The second and thirdplace winners will each receive $2,500 and $1,500 respectively.

At the conclusion of the competition Richard Carpenter, along with two of his daughters, will perform a 30minute concert.

Concert tickets may be purchased at the Civic Arts Plaza box office or through Ticketmaster.

Richard Carpenter and his sister Karen recorded a number of hit songs in the early 1970s. Carpenter and his wife, Mary, became residents of Thousand Oaks in 2000.
