SVHS softball team breaks county record

With a 5-1 victory over Moorpark High Tuesday, the Simi Valley softball team established a new Ventura County record with its 22nd consecutive win to begin the season.

According to Pioneer head coach Russ Michael, the previous record of 21 straight wins was set by Buena High in 1989.

Michael said he wasn't sure if the single-season record was for all high school sports in the county or just softball.

"I'm really proud of these kids," Michael said. "They've worked hard to get to this point, and they continue to work hard. They're not just satisfied with breaking the record. They want to go all the way."

Simi Valley, ranked fourth in the state by CalHiSports.com, entered Thursday's game against 11th-ranked Thousand Oaks with a 22-0 overall record and a 9-0 mark in the Marmonte League. - Stephen Dorman
