Cross about crosswalks

Remember that amendment to the Constitution? You know, the one that guarantees us the right to operate a motor vehicle?

What is it again? The 19th? The 28th?

Wait a second . . . ah yes. It doesn't exist.

Yet every day millions of us drive like it's an inalienable right, not a privilege, to get around on four wheels.

How else could we explain the blatant disregard so many of us show for the rules of the road- and for our neighbors- as demonstrated perfectly by the latest crosswalk sting conducted by the Simi Valley Police Department.

For the fourth time in two months, cops found a bevy of drivers who were too distracted, too busy, too rushed, too whatever- to pay heed to the most basic and vital of traffic signs: the crosswalk.

Acting as a decoy, Simi Valley Officer Nicole Anderson strolled back and forth across busy Cochran Street (giving drivers ample time to stop) to see if cars would yield to her presence. Time and time again, they did not.

In fact, Anderson had more than one close encounter, which could have caused her serious injury if she hadn't been paying close attention.

Police say the stings are a response to an increase in the number of complaints they've been receiving from residents about drivers on Simi streets. It appears some have had enough of the "I'm king of the road" attitude that many seem to subscribe to- and good for them.

Considering the size and power of the modern automobile, it's no wonder some drivers feel invincible when they get behind the wheel.

Still, that's no excuse.

It's time we all start remembering that the opportunity to operate a 2,000-pound steel machine capable of traveling 100 mph is not a right, it's a privilege, and it ought be treated as such.

Because, after all, a driver's license allows you the privilege to drive- but not to drive like an idiot.
