Simi rock band releasing debut album
During the week, the Simi Valley father and son duo spend their days operating a labor-intensive landscaping business. And for the past five years, 48year-old Bob and 24-year-old Alex have spent all their free time working hard on a labor of love- "Dream Another Day," the debut album from their rock band Tuesday's Rain. "We're just trying to get people together and give them something good to sink their teeth in," Bob said. "When you go to a great show, you feel uplifted in some way. You've created a memory." This Saturday, memories are exactly what Tuesday's Rain hopes to create, when the duo, along with bassist Jim Hoover, celebrate the independent release of their album- a collection of 14 rock tracks that tell stories of the Hargroves' lives. "A lot of my songs are stories, and most of the time the endings are inspirational," Bob said. "We want to give people hope through our life experiences," Alex added. "We want to create something for people to know that someone else knows their pain too . . . just to not feel so alone." The story of Tuesday's Rain began in winter 2003, when Bob Hargrove broke things off with a longtime girlfriend. Inspired by the breakup and the heavy rain raging outside the Camarillo apartment where he was then living, Bob began writing a song with his 12-string guitar. "The lyric was 'Tuesday's rain fell upon me,' and I thought to myself, 'The rain is kind of cleansing me,'" Bob said. The song, originally written as an acoustic track, would soon pave the way for the next five years, when Alex- who'd played drums as a teenager for local bands Creep and Venus in Flames- offered his expertise to his dad. "I bought a digital drum kit and Alex added the drum parts," Bob said. "We just built the song, and then I wrote another one. He started laying down the drum beats for all the songs I wrote." "It's always been a natural talent," Alex said. "I can always just sit down at a drum kit and just play. I don't have to think twice about it, I just do it. It's weird." The following year, Bob bought a townhouse in Simi Valley and turned it into a full-blown jam house and recording studio, so he and his son could make music on their own time without concern about professional studio fees and hours. Inside Hargrove's living room is Bob's 12string acousticelectric guitar, Alex's glowinthedark DW drum kit, some condenser microphones, a recording console and various other highend instruments and studio equipment- everything they needed to make a good album, Bob said. To strengthen the dynamic, the pair began auditioning bassists and found Hoover through a friend's recommendation. The collaboration also led to teaming up with Anthony Valli- guitarist of rap-rock band Crazy Town- who would sign on to produce the band's debut album. "Anthony recorded us live here (in the house)," Bob said. "Then he'd take the live tracks home and rebuild the whole thing. He'd bring it back to us with digital drums, bass tracks, and rhythm guitars. Then I'd add in the backing vocals the next day. "I think the more creativity you bring into it, the bigger the picture gets," he said. "Because Anthony came from a hip-hop background, he changed the sound of the band a little bit. It raised our production value and made (the music) more accessible to more people." "Dream Another Day" by Tuesday's Rain is available for download on iTunes or myspace.com/tuesdaysrain.
