Assistance centers offering help in obtaining stimulus package rebates
Event is for one day only

Internal Revenue Service Assistance Centers in the counties of Kern, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and Ventura will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 29 to help people file tax returns in order to receive their economic stimulus payment, commonly referred to as a rebate.

IRS personnel will answer questions and help file tax returns, which must be done in order to receive a stimulus payment.

The following IRS offices are among 300 locations nationwide opening their doors for the "Super Saturday" event:

•751 Daily Drive, Camarillo •300 N. Los Angeles St., downtown Los Angeles

•1332 Anacapa St., Santa Barbara

•6230 Van Nuys Blvd., Van Nuys-San Fernando Valley

The above offices provide regular service from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

In addition, during the tax filing season, more than 180 free tax assistance sites operate in the four-county area. Some serve taxpayers on a walk-in basis while others require an appointment.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites help people who earn less than $40,000, many of whom could qualify for the economic stimulus payment and the earned income tax credit. To locate a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site, call the IRS at (800) 906-9887.

The AARP Tax Aide Program offers free tax help to taxpayers who are 60 and older.

Seniors who normally do not file a tax return but had at least $3,000 in Social Security benefits will need to file a Form 1040A in order to receive this year's economic stimulus payment. To locate the nearest AARP Tax Aide site, call (888) 227-7669.
