City's Arbor Day celebration will be April 5
This year's theme is "Trees are Terrific…Inside and Out." The event will feature a chainsaw wood carving demonstration performed by Cherie Currie's Chainsaw Art Gallery, colored posters by local fifth grade classes who participated in local and national Arbor Day poster contests, a handson educational workshop and more. The ceremony will also include the planting of cherry trees to posthumously honor local citizens who donated their time and talents to Simi Valley, including the late Los Angeles Police Officer Mike Selleh and Simi Valley Police Officer Gary Galloway, former City of Simi Valley employees Sam Freed and Brian Medley, and Richard Hlebasko. Awards will be presented to the winners of the local Arbor Day poster contest. The event is open to the public. Refreshments will be available and a limited supply of 15gallon trees and oak seedlings will be distributed to attendees on a first come, first served basis.Simi Valley is recognized by the National Arbor Foundation as a Tree City USA and Tree Growth Community.
